What is Feldenkrais?

The Feldenkrais Method® is a unique movement method that works on a physical, mental and emotional level. Gentle movement impulses open up new possibilities to become more aware of yourself and your body and to shed restrictive movement habits and pain.

The method considers the individual, lifelong ability of people to learn and change (neuroplasticity) as an essential component of health and vitality.

Why Feldenkrais?

Modern living conditions are making it increasingly difficult for many people to relate to their own bodies. Over the course of their lives, they lose the relaxed and easy way of moving and slip into entrenched movement patterns. Most of these movement patterns and habits feel good because they are familiar to us. However, not all of them are healthy and will at some point be felt through tension, pain or immobility, for example. The Feldenkrais Method offers ways of becoming aware of these habits and changing them.

Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais (1904 - 1984)

Nuclear physicist, engineer and martial arts enthusiast

A knee injury, for which the doctors gave him little hope of ever being able to walk again without pain, prompted Moshé Feldenkrais to research his own movement behavior. He used his observations from martial arts as well as his knowledge of biomechanics, evolutionary research, education, psychology and anthropology. His findings at the time have since been confirmed by scientific studies, particularly in the field of neurophysiology.

His understanding of movement as the basis of all human action and activity creates a framework in which it becomes clear that our lives are a continuous field of learning. Over decades of research, Feldenkrais developed a highly effective system for promoting learning and health - the Feldenkrais Method®.
